Lux Fiat

My employment at Green Mountain College officially ended today…

These past few months have kept bringing me back to two key words, the motto of this green place, lux fiat which means “let there be light”. I’ve been reflecting on what that means, and how Green Mountain always brought the light. Even in our darkest hours the light of our school, the light of our community, was always there.

That is until our fiscal problems became so intractable that finally our light was extinguished.

The dormitories and classrooms that were once littered with students are now vacant. Offices that were once alive with the clicking of keys and the ringing of phones lay silent. Animals that once wandered the farm have all been relocated, and books languish on the shelves with no one to read them.

It all comes back to one bitter and distressing truth, Green Mountain College really is gone. The particular spark that made Green Mountain what it was is no more; gone away with the people who brought it. All that remains now is the empty shell of a place, and not so distant memories of what it once was.

For thirteen years Green Mountain was a place I called home, so, in closing I have a request.

To whomever takes ownership of this green place please treat it well, but most importantly, lux fiat. Bring light back into this place and keep a piece of that spirit alive.

From these mountains green with promise
Seasoned with the spice of years
Northern lights fall fresh upon us
While the night-time disappears.

Lux fiat – o’er grove and granite
Light that moves at speed of grace
Trace the heartbeat of our planet
Through our heartland, this green place.

Will you meet me at Green Mountain?
Walk in hope, sustain the climb?
Kindle light in deep communion?
Share the struggles of our time?

Lux fiat – o’er grove and granite
Light that moves at speed of grace
Trace the heartbeat of our planet
Through our heartland, this green place.

Green Mountain College Anthem, “This Green Place”
